What's new with the wines?
In April, we bottled the 2006 Syrah & Petite Sirah. We also bottled our first table wine. This table wine contains the first grapes ever picked from the Petite Sirah vines that were planted in the year 2000. We feel sentimental about these "little babies" and although they didn't make "the cut" for the premium Alger Vineyards Petite Sirah, they have made a delicious new table wine for us.
In November, we will be bottling our first estate grown Zinfandel for Tehama County. It will be released next year and we hope to have an award winning Zinfandel for Tehama County!
Alger Vineyards Wins Founders Award
In August of 2007 Alger Vineyards was awarded the Founders Award from a statewide organization, "P.S. I love you". This is a group that specializes in the promotion and quality on behalf of the varietal Petite Sirah. The criteria for this award is that the family, and/or current person selected for this award must have worked with Petite Sirah in their vineyard since the late 1800's to the mid 1900's or must have producted Petite Sirah as a variety in that particular Vineyard since the first release of Petite Sirah by Jim Concannon in 1964 through 1974.
There were sixteen Vineyards in California that were chosen for this award along with Dr. Carole Meredith, the geneticist from UC Davis, who discovered the DNA finger printing for Petite Sirah (also know as Durif). John and I were honored to be included along with such prestigious vineyards as:
- Foppiano Vineyards
- Concannon Vineyards
- Field Stone Winery
- Ballentine Vineyards
- F. Teldeski Winery
- Pedroncelli Winery
- Mettler Family Vineyards
- Stag Leap Winery
- Parducci Wine Estates
- Mounts Vineyards
- Bogle Winery
- Trentadue Winery
- David Bruce Winery
- Langtry Estates
- Robert Brittan
for this award and believe me were they suprised to hear about a "little vineyard" in Tehama County with "Old Vine Petite Sirah"!
Yeah... We did it Again & Again!
In January of 2008, Alger Vineyards and Winery won Silver medals in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, on both the 2005 Syrah and 2005 Petite Sirah. The 2008 professional wine judging took place during the week of January 7th, just in time for the Alger Vineyards Release Party for the 2005 wines. It made a great reason to celebrate! Alger Vineyards and Winery has medaled three years in a row in this competition. In 2007 we won a silver medal for the 2004 Petite Sirah and a bronze medal for the 2004 Syrah. In 2006, the 2003 Syrah and 2003 Petite Sirah both took bronze medals. The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition still remains the largest competition in America. This year there were 66 professional judges representing trade, education, media, retail, and restaurants throughout the United States. There were 4235 wines entered from 1500 wineries across the country.
Alger Vineyards' award winning Syrah and Petite Sirah is available for tasting in the tasting room every Saturday and Sunday from 12-5pm.
Alger Vineyards & Winery Opens Tasting Room in Manton, California
Northern California’s Newest Wine Destination
for Syrah & Petite Sirah
Manton, Ca. Alger Vineyards & Winery, a grower
and producer of exemplary Syrah and Petite Sirah celebrates the opening
of the Manton Tasting Room. Located in the Southern Cascade foothills,
also known as the “Gateway to Mt. Lassen”, the Alger Tasting Room is a perfect addition to the beautiful countryside of Manton, CA.
The tasting room will serve their latest releases of Syrah and Petite
Sirah, which are estate grown under John and Linda Alger’s watchful
eye. “My devotion to quality limits these wines to small quantity
offerings. I oversee every detail of the wine from the vines I grow,
the handpicked grapes, to crush, to bottle,” notes Alger.
The Tasting Room will be open to the public
on the weekends from noon to 5pm. Visitors can enjoy the plump,
full red wines for a $5.00 tasting fee, which includes a souvenir
wine glass.

Alger Vineyards and Winery Medals with the Big Boys!
In November of 2005 we entered our 2003 Syrah and 2003 Petite Sirah into
the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Wines are judged by varietals
as well as price per bottle. The 2006 professional judging took place in
Cloverdale on January 10-13th. Fifty-five judges from around the
country participated in evaluation over 3300 wine entries. This competition
is the largest competition of American wines in the world.
Entries were submitted from across the United States though the overwhelming
majority originated from wineries in California. The competition was tough
and we were very excited to win a Bronze Medal on both the 2003 Syrah and
