Alger Vineyards was established in the early 70’s and sits at approximately the 2500ft elevation on the western reaches of Mount Lassen in Northern California. The altitude of the vineyard provides cool nights during the hot summer growing season. The vines are planted in well-drained, volcanic soils on arid slopes. As a result, the grapes have great tannic structure and firm fruit acids.
Our emphasis is to work with small lots of high quality grapes grown only from our estate vineyard. With meticulous attention to detail, we strive for a distinctive mountain character with focused flavors. We farm using biodynamic methods which bring the best quality to our grapes as well as to our environment.
Our winemaker, Bob Marr is known for his handcrafted wines that are extremely fruit-forward and superlative in quality. He has received many awards for his extraordinary wines and winemaking practices. We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have him on board.
During harvest all grapes are hand-picked as well as hand sorted. The grapes are cooled, de-stemmed (not crushed) and “cold soaked” prior to fermentation. The grapes are inoculated with specific yeast strains to accentuate vineyard and varietals characteristics.
Following slow, cooler fermentation, the grapes are lightly pressed. Extended maceration is utilized for selected lots. Blending trials are completed after fermentation and again after barrel aging. All of our wines are aged in French and American Oak from selected forests and coopers. New barrels are used sparingly for contributing nuances that enhance without overpowering aromas and flavors. The results are a textured mouth feel and lengthy finish.
We sincerely hope you enjoy our wines!
